Supporting Ukrainian Research and Innovation

March 27, 2025
Incredible energy, enthusiasm and dedication during the workshop hosted by ETH Zurich.

Two weeks ago, I had the privilege of participating in a workshop on “Strengthening Ukraine’s Science and Innovation System” hosted by ETH Zurich. This day-and-a-half event brought together research and innovation experts from Europe, the US and Ukraine to explore how these domains can be leveraged for Ukraine’s post-war rebuilding and enhanced resilience.

Over the course of the workshop we discussed various relevant topics, including building global partnerships, bridging the gap between science and policy, and collaboration with industry. We also explored an Italian initiative to create a coalition of willing countries and institutions to partner and contribute to Ukraine’s research and innovation sector. In addition, we heard about some of the scientific work that is still ongoing in Ukraine in spite of the circumstances.

The presentations from our Ukrainian colleagues were truly outstanding. Their enthusiasm, energy, and dedication in the face of adversity were both inspiring and humbling. Examples of science parks from the Kyiv Aviation Institute and the Kyiv Academic University were particularly impressive, rivaling many of the top science parks in EU member states. Another striking example of Ukraine’s innovative capacity is its drone sector. Before the war, Ukraine had just one drone producer. Now, there are more than 500, with hundreds of researchers and innovators working tirelessly on constant improvements. This rapid growth and adaptation showcases the country’s remarkable resilience and innovative spirit.

The EU’s research and innovation systems would greatly benefit from the full integration of Ukrainian colleagues. Their dynamism and astonishing energy bring a unique perspective and drive that could catalyse innovation across the continent. Ukraine’s scientific community is not just surviving, but innovating and excelling, despite immense challenges. Their resilience and forward-thinking approach will undoubtedly play a crucial role in the country’s recovery and future development.

What truly set this workshop apart was that every participant left with a personal commitment to take concrete action. This collective dedication to making a tangible difference underscores the workshop’s impact, and the shared resolve to support Ukraine’s scientific community. It reinforced the importance of international collaboration in science and innovation, especially in times of crisis. I’m looking forward to seeing how these discussions and personal commitments develop to support Ukraine’s scientific renaissance, and strengthen global research and innovation partnerships.
