Two PhD Students Embark on a Research Exchange in Asia

by Elliott Denton and Marius Lutz, 19 July 2022
Hi, we are co-writing this blog so let us introduce ourselves:
ML: Hello, I am Marius Lutz (ML), a 4th year PhD student in the Morandi group in the laboratory for organic chemistry at the department for chemistry and applied biosciences, who has been researching how to crack C–C bonds in organic molecules. On this exchange I want to expand the range of C–C bonds that can be activated, as well as challenge myself by living in a new country and group. Developments in this area of chemistry have potential utility in the discovery of new medicines and plastic recycling.

ED: Hi, I am Elliott Denton (ED). I am also a 4th year PhD student in the same group as Marius, but I focus on reactions which create two or more carbon-carbon bonds in a single step using transition metal catalysis. For the exchange, I wanted to challenge myself by learning about polymer chemistry. This field is significant in everyone’s lives, as plastics are used daily. My background gives me a different perspective of chemistry, which I feel can make a positive impact on this research field.

Both of us found the start of the exchange a little bit rocky, due to one having to quarantine because of covid regulations (ED) and the other becoming ill a few days after arriving (ML). However, afterwards we both found it beneficial to be proactive meeting group members, asking for help etc. After all, we were joining their group and did not know where things were or how the systems worked.

I did have to push myself a little to do this but was aware that if I didn’t make the effort, I couldn’t expect others to. While this was a little odd, as you lose some independence, it only took a few weeks for me to settle in and be able to do most things by myself. Moreover, people were very generous and willing to help. From there, and with planning some weekend activities to visit different areas around the country, things went much more smoothly. However, three months go by very fast, with much of this written waiting for the return flight.

ML: At the time of writing, I have finished 1/3rd of the exchange. After two months I adjusted to life in Japan, having mastered daily interactions, found a new routine and met many great people. Japanese people are so kind and considerate, which makes living here easy. There is still so much to explore, and Kyoto shows me a new side each day. The city is rich in cultural heritage, full of greenery and has a charm that other cities of this size lack. We are now in the rainy season with the hot and humid summer approaching. I am writing about my life in Kyoto on my blog called Tabimonogatari where a longer version of my perspective can be found. If you are interested in reading more, please stop by.
To wrap up, we are both incredibly grateful to have been given this opportunity to come to Japan and South Korea for an exchange. Researching and living abroad during the PhD is a tremendous experience that we can highly recommend. Living in a foreign country is an enriching experience where you can appreciate other cultures. Consider taking this opportunity and enrich your PhD with a stay abroad!
