Track how you move, just wearing your clothes! Improve athletic performance and prevent injuries by monitoring your biomechanics.

My name is Valeria, I am a PhD student at ETH and my research is on textile wearable devices for mobile health applications. Together with my colleagues at the Biomedical and Mobile Health Technology group in the Department of Health Sciences and Technologies, we develop smart clothes (also known as e-textiles) to track health and fitness.

BMHT UCI team: Valeria Galli, Dr Chakaveh Ahmadizadeh, Luca Anceschi and Renata Cia Sanches (Chakaveh Ahmadizadeh)

A few weeks ago, we had a great stage to showcase one of our technologies – a smart knee sleeve – at the UCI Road Cycling and Para-cycling Championship in Zurich. It was really interesting to see how we caught the attention of different passers-by, young and old, sport lovers to “couch potatoes”. The idea of having a simple piece of clothing tracking one’s movement looked appealing to many of them, from the amateur runner with “that tiny pain in the knee after a few kilometers”, to the passionate cyclist riding up and down mountain passes on weekends.

Troubleshooting and fixing (ETH Zürich / Alessandro Della Bella)

Many people (more than what we expected!) gifted us with their time by participating in our study, curious to try out the smart knee sleeve. We had them cycle on a stationary bike for 5 minutes at easy pace or – for those in for a challenge – with increasing load to reach exhaustion. While catching their breath on the bike, most of our participants asked about the technology and its practical applications: it was quite rewarding for us to see how most people could relate to the usefulness of monitoring movement to avoid incorrect posture and/or dynamics during a training or in the process of rehabilitation after an injury.

You need to have some fun too! (ETH Zürich / Alessandro Della Bella)

We could see our system in operation “in the wild”: we had no shortage of troubleshooting and quick fixes on the spot to spice up the experience (lots of stitching and fixing behind the scenes). No lack of fun moments either, as in “we do not have a big enough size for this giant quad muscle”, or “will this person ever get to exhaustion, or can they cycle forever?”.

It has been nine intense days of hard work, but well rewarded by the satisfaction of bringing the technologies we develop outside of the lab and see them in action, actually being as “comfortable and suited for everyday use” as we like claiming on our scientific publications.

What are you waiting for? Don’t settle for heart rate and step count only and look into how your body moves with our smart clothes!

Explaining the procedure… (ETH Zürich / Alessandro Della Bella)

On a sunny Saturday afternoon during the UN Summit on the Future in New York City, I stepped out of a yellow taxi with a heavy bag of workshop materials and made my way to the 12th floor of NeueHouse. Together with Chris Luebkeman, Head of Strategic Foresight at ETH, we prepared the room to welcome ETH alumni, friends, staff and faculty to participate in the workshop that would identify the most pressing challenges facing higher education today.

Chris giving the workshop participants some pointers (ETH Zürich / Evelyn Freja)

Divided into five groups, the participants chose three topics in the areas of society, politics, environment and technology. With a master’s degree in international affairs, I was drawn to the group discussing politics, where we talked about extremism, multipolarity, public spending, and universities as places of knowledge, deep thinking, and a mission to foster public dialogue. Although we had participants from both Switzerland and the US, we swiftly identified polarization as a key driver of change for ETH. It will impact education, research, innovation, and even governance. Once again, I was struck by the complexity of the challenges facing a university as I listened to the presentations of the other groups.

More food for thought was offered by the subsequent panel discussion with Nicolas Dirks President and CEO, New York Academy of Sciences, Joann Halpern, Director, Hasso Platner Institute, New York, and Joël Mesot, President of ETH Zurich. In their remarks, Nicolas and Joël explained how these places of knowledge, deep thinking and innovation came to be, and the impact their creation has had on their respective societies. The wealth on which Switzerland thrives today is built on the excellence in engineering and other expertise that emerged from ETH Zurich more than a century ago.

During the panel discussion (ETH Zürich / Evelyn Freja)

The panellists agreed that while expertise is important, it cannot thrive in isolation. People must exchange ideas, learn from each other, and collaborate across disciplines and even sectors if we are to find innovative solutions. Joann shared her insights on how the methodology of design thinking can facilitate such collaborations, but also creating physical spaces that allow for serendipitous encounters can stimulate such collaborations. ETH is well on its way to moving away from traditional teaching to provide interdisciplinary experiences for its students, for example through competitions and project-based learning.

I was so excited to hear from these very experienced education leaders that interdisciplinary work and cross-collaboration is the secret sauce for the future of education, because I’ve spent the last few years building global initiatives that foster collaboration across sectors and disciplines, and I’ve seen with my own eyes the “magic” that happens when people bring their different perspectives and knowledge, and are open and willing to share and learn from each other.
